happy birthday, Cyd Charisse

Here's a burlesque-inspired jazzy number danced by legendary babe, Cyd Charisse. She was one of the most amazing dancers in Hollywood during the golden era of musical cinema. I grew up watching her movies and she's one of the reasons I wanted to dance. Cyd's legs were insured in 1952 for $5 million and listed in the Guinness Book Of World Records starting in 2001, as "The Most Valuable Legs" -- insured for even more than world famous pin-up model Betty Grable. (You may also recognize her from Janet Jackson's "Alright" video, in which she still was showing plenty of leg and serious hot babe-itude well into her golden years.)

  1. You know she danced with Maria Tallchief in Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo back in the day, before she went to Hollywood. When I read a biography of Maria Tallchief back in the mid-80's, I got the impression that they wre pretty good friends. You'd never know she had polio when she was a kid, the way she danced. I always wanted legs like hers. Or like Vera Ellen's.

  2. I love that when she was asked who she preferred dancing with, Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, she answered, "That's like comparing apples and oranges. They are both delicious." Too cute.
