happy birthday, Cyd Charisse
Here's a burlesque-inspired jazzy number danced by legendary babe, Cyd Charisse. She was one of the most amazing dancers in Hollywood during the golden era of musical cinema. I grew up watching her movies and she's one of the reasons I wanted to dance. Cyd's legs were insured in 1952 for $5 million and listed in the Guinness Book Of World Records starting in 2001, as "The Most Valuable Legs" -- insured for even more than world famous pin-up model Betty Grable. (You may also recognize her from Janet Jackson's "Alright" video, in which she still was showing plenty of leg and serious hot babe-itude well into her golden years.)

You know she danced with Maria Tallchief in Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo back in the day, before she went to Hollywood. When I read a biography of Maria Tallchief back in the mid-80's, I got the impression that they wre pretty good friends. You'd never know she had polio when she was a kid, the way she danced. I always wanted legs like hers. Or like Vera Ellen's.
ReplyDeleteI love that when she was asked who she preferred dancing with, Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, she answered, "That's like comparing apples and oranges. They are both delicious." Too cute.
